2008 For the first three years of his career, Happ never posted an ERA above 2.81 at any level, but as a tall lefty with average-at-best velocity who got by on location and changing speeds, he was seen as a pitcher whose style wouldn't play well against more advanced hitters. The rubber hit the road in 2007, tThough some elbow soreness didn't help matters. He looks like no more than a back-of-the-rotation starter or middle reliever. 2007 Happ cleared two levels in 2006 and finished the year by pitching in the Arizona Fall League. His stuff is unimpressive--a fastball that generally stays below 90 and a slider that`s too frequently a slurve. What he does have is control, a deceptive delivery that makes his fastball look faster than it really is, a good changeup, and an intelligent, polished approach to pitching. That`s good and bad--learning how to pitch effectively is where a lot of minor league pitchers develop, so it is difficult to see where and how he`s going to improve.
